Collection: Dry Skin

A complaint often heard from people with dry skin is that no matter what they do to their skin, they can’t seem to get it moisturized enough. It tends to feel tight, itchy, sometimes even chapped, and can appear flaky and dull. Untreated, dry skin ages faster. Fine lines develop earlier than those skin types with adequate or excess oil. Dry or Alipoid skin is usually genetically determined and a lifelong problem because the sebaceous glands are smaller and underactive. Skin with normal oil production will have a light surface film composed of oil, as well as perspiration and moisture from the air. Dry skin lacks this film to some degree. Without the lipids acting as a “raincoat” to hold the water in the skin, it will also suffer from dehydration.

Harsh climates or overexposure to the sun will make the dry skin challenge even worse as will certain medications, alcohol, poor diet and smoking. It’s not surprising that using the wrong makeup or skin care products for dry skin can also cause the skin to be even drier. As we age, there is naturally a decrease in oil production so dry skin becomes more severe as the skin matures.
